Jefferson’s Ferry Honored for Exceptional Health Care Achievements and Workplace Safety Programs

January 14, 2019

S. SETAUKET, NY–Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Retirement Community was recently honored for its outstanding Achievements in Health Care by Long Island Business News, the region’s business weekly. The non-profit community was named the 2018 recipient of the award in the “Exemplary Performance by a Non-Hospital Facility” category for making a significant impact in health care-related services, resident engagement and satisfaction, its superior customer service and its sound business acumen.

Home to more than 400 residents, Jefferson’s Ferry provides a sense of community and on-site medical resources for retirees who seek a healthy balance of social interactions, a maintenance-free lifestyle, and peace of mind. Residents pay a one-time entry fee and a predictable monthly fee, and are able to enjoy a host of multidisciplinary activities and amenities designed to maximize their quality of life. The Healthy Living Center serves the wellness needs of Jefferson’s Ferry residents with programs and medical services that support an active lifestyle. Its whole person wellness program emphasizes proper nutrition, socialization, intellectual stimulation, physical health, safety and security.

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized with the Achievements in Health Care award,” said Robert E. Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. “This distinction is a testament to not only the level of importance we place on providing our residents with the utmost in care, support and amenities, but also to the commitment of our staff and Board to ensure that our overall operation exceeds expectations year after year.

“Demographically, our primary market area, which encompasses Brookhaven and its surrounding communities, is experiencing a higher growth rate of people over 75 years of age than any other place on Long Island or in New York State,” Caulfield added. “The projected growth rate over the next five years will continue to exceed that of most communities in the nation. Jefferson’s Ferry is an important resource for this very large and growing population and their family members.”

Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Retirement Community also was recently recognized by the New York State Department of Labor for a trio of programs aimed at ensuring the safety of its employees. NYSDOL Commissioner of Labor Roberta Reardon issued three certificates to Jefferson’s Ferry for its implementation of Safety Incentive, Return to Work and Drug & Alcohol Prevention programs that satisfy the requirements of the state’s Workplace Safety and Loss Prevention Incentive Program (WSLPIP).

The purpose of the WSLPIP is to help reduce occupational injuries and illnesses in the workplace as well as the costs associated with them, and to return injured employees to work as quickly and safely as possible. The incentive program approvals granted by the state are effective for a period of three years, January 1, 2019-December 31, 2021, and are contingent upon the employer’s submission of annual reports to the NYSDOL. The incentive credit received is then applied by Jefferson’s Ferry’s insurance carrier and results in a drop in its workers’ compensation costs.

“We are pleased to be able to implement all three of the safety programs outlined by the State Department of Labor for our valued employees,” said Caulfield. “Taking precautionary measures and ensuring the highest level of safety in the workplace is integral to the operation of any organization, and it allows us to continue maximizing our efficiency.”

Jefferson’s Ferry is a nonprofit Life Plan community for active adults age 62 and above, with independent living cottages, apartments, assisted living, and a quality health care center all on one site, along with restaurants, fitness center, indoor pool, computer center, library, recreational areas, gardens, and gazebos. On Long Island’s north shore, Jefferson’s Ferry is surrounded by various attractions, shopping, beaches, theaters, and a world-renowned university.

The Vincent Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry earned a 5-star rating from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and was named a “Best Of” nursing home by U.S. News & World Report. Jefferson’s Ferry as a whole received the industrywide Community Choice Award for resident satisfaction and engagement and FitchRatings has assigned Jefferson’s Ferry a BBB+ bond rating. Locally, Jefferson’s Ferry has consistently been voted Best Retirement Community and Best Assisted Living on Long Island by The Long Island Press. Jefferson’s Ferry has also regularly been recognized for Excellence by the Hauppauge Industrial Association’s Business Achievement Awards program.
