Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community to Break Ground on Major Expansion/Renovation to Appeal to Long Island’s Active Older Adults

March 4, 2020

SOUTH SETAUKET, NY–Jefferson’s Ferry, Long Island’s first continuing care retirement community (CCRC), is preparing to embark on a major expansion to offer Long Island’s growing number of older adults a more progressive and wellness-focused lifestyle option for retirement living. According to Robert Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry, construction is planned for summer 2020. Jefferson’s Ferry is located at One Jefferson Ferry Drive in South Setauket.

The AARP estimates about 10,000 Baby Boomers hit retirement age every single day. In the past decade, the number of individuals over the age of 65 on Long Island has grown nearly 30 percent, according to a report prepared by the Center for an Urban Future.

Upon completion, Jefferson’s Ferry’s multi-million-dollar project will offer 75 spacious and finely appointed one- and two-bedroom, plus den, apartment homes, and a modern and fully equipped fitness, wellness and rehabilitation center. A new memory care building will provide hope and care to individuals living with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other memory-impairing diseases.

The expansion will also include a new marketplace café, bistro-bar and destination dining room with alternating types of cuisines. In addition, other enhanced services and amenities will cater to both current and future residents.

“Our expansion is about more than adding square footage to the award-winning community; it’s about catering to a new generation of older adults who view retirement living as their ‘third act’ or a ‘life reboot,’” said Caulfield. “People want to live at a community that gives them the freedom, resources, and opportunities to live retirement their way, without the hassle of home ownership.”

At Jefferson’s Ferry, residents travel, take classes, contribute to the arts, start new hobbies and volunteer. Some residents continue to work part-time. Overall, according to a national study by Mather Lifeways, people who live in CCRCs experience higher life satisfaction, better moods, less stress, and more positive perceptions of aging than their counterparts.

“People experience more joy and fulfillment when they embrace a lifestyle that elevates their well-being,” says Caulfield. “Our health needs may change as they grow older, but our need for purpose and community remains the same.”

Through the community’s Journey Toward Renewal initiative, residents at every age and stage of life can embrace the seven dimensions of wellness – spiritual, physical, emotional, vocational, intellectual, environmental and social – to live a full and happy life.

Jefferson’s Ferry’s Project Partners have more than 130 years of combined experience in planning and designing communities for the next generation of older adults. Greystone Communities serves as development consultant, KDA Architects provides master planning and architectural design and Merlino Design provides interior design planning.

Deposits for new apartment homes are currently being accepted.
