Keller Woman Turns 100 on August 31 and will Finally Reunite with Family at Mustang Creek Estates

September 1, 2020

KELLER, TEXAS- It’s time to celebrate! Monday, August 31st, Irene VanGoethem, who lives at Mustang Creek Estates of Keller, turned 100 years old. And just in time for this huge milestone, she was able to safely (and from a distance) reunite with family. August marks the first time in five months families have been able to visit loved ones at senior living communities in Texas.

Following Governor Greg Abbott’s recent guidelines regarding senior living communities, Mustang Creek Estates is allowing families to visit their loved ones. All visits must be held outside on the shaded front patios, family members must wear a mask and pass a screening process, which includes a temperature check and questionnaire. Residents and team members also go through the same screening process daily. The governor’s guidelines also require there are no confirmed coronavirus cases among residents or caregivers in the last two weeks at a community.

“We’re excited to welcome families back to our communities. They have been our greatest partner during the pandemic, going above and beyond to respect our social distancing policies and protect their loved ones,” said Melissa Meyer, the community’s executive director. “We are grateful for their continued support with the socially distanced visits. The face-to-face contact really means so much to our residents.”

On Monday, August 31, VanGoethem’s family brought the party to their mom. They had pizza and cake out on the patio at noon. They also  decorated VanGoethem’s window with fun signs, and the community decked out the porch with balloons and more! Monday’s party celebrated a century of knowledge, wisdom and love.

VanGoethem has been keeping herself busy during quarantine reading. She loves mysteries. She’s also getting by with a lot of dark chocolate, often dropped off by her daughter Theresa Bartholomew, who lives nearby. Her two sons also often mail chocolate. And another daughter always makes sure fresh flowers are delivered for all special occasions.

“Mom always said she wanted to live to 100! We’re thrilled we get to celebrate with her. We also plan to FaceTime with lots of family. She has people around the world who love her,” said Bartholomew.

The mom of seven already celebrated a huge milestone during the pandemic. In July, she became a great-great grandma! The baby was born in Germany, and pictures are already up in VanGoethem’s room!

Originally from Wisconsin, VanGoethem has called Mustang Creek Estates in Keller home for nearly three years. She originally retired in Arizona with her husband Bob, enjoying the warm sunshine 365 days a year. While living in Arizona, the VanGoethem’s were committed volunteers at a local food bank for over 25 years. A few years back, she decided she was ready to be closer to family and made the move to Texas. In addition to Bartholomew, two of her other children call Texas home.

VanGoethem continues to love the outdoors. Her favorite vacation was white water rafting down the Colorado and sleeping under the stars. She was 87 when she took that trip!

All of VanGoethem’s siblings lived into their 90s. So, what’s her secret to a long life? Having a positive attitude, a loving family and exercise.

“Mrs. VanGoethem is such a joy to celebrate. We are so proud to call her one of our friends and neighbors at Mustang Creek Estates,” said Meyer. “She told us she really misses hugs, and while we still can’t physically hug her, we hope this party wraps her in our love.”
