Oakmont of East Sacramento Celebrates Grand Opening

October 27, 2020

East Sacramento, California– Oakmont of East Sacramento, located in the Fabulous Forties historic neighborhood on nearly 3.5 acres, recently celebrated its grand opening with exclusive events and tours, featuring five-star culinary and innovative person-centered memory care programming.

Oakmont of East Sacramento is one of the first of several Oakmont Senior Living communities to be built and opened during the 2020 pandemic. With that in mind, guests were required to RSVP, wear masks, social distance and follow safety precautions while enjoying the more than 140,000-square-foot community. There are 142 apartment homes; including 100 independent living/assisted living and 42 memory care apartments at Oakmont of East Sacramento.

The community also boasts a 36,000-square-foot parking garage, a wine cave, multiple dining rooms, its Traditions program for memory care and other Oakmont Senior Living programs geared toward the person-centered approach.

Longtime senior living industry leader Terry Ervin is the executive director and Deanna Barker is director of memory care. Ervin has also spent time at Oakmont of Carmichael as executive director and is an Oakmont Senior Living veteran.

“It has truly been a team effort to open this gorgeous Oakmont community,” said Terry Ervin, executive director of Oakmont of East Sacramento. “We appreciate all the support and our founding residents who have moved in and are happy to be here with us.”

Events during the grand opening geared toward memory care were set up to showcase how Oakmont of East Sacramento has a focus on dementia and memory care. One of the two movie theaters has been customized into an immersive multi-sensory experience with sights, sounds, smells and touch.

Using aroma therapy, fiber optic lights, tactile props, themed music and sounds and visual movie bliss, the Oakmont Sensory Movie Experience transports you into the screen. Themes include – Amazon Rainforest, Under the Sea, The Galaxy (Stars), Safari, Camping in the Woods, Changing Seasons (Fall, Winter, Summer, Spring), Blooming Flowers, Desert Wonders.

Another new innovation at Oakmont of East Sacramento is the use of Rendever, a Virtual Reality device designed for seniors. Residents simply put on a headset and they’re immediately transported into an immersive experience. Rendever’s virtual reality platform is used in group settings so residents can share stories and deepen their connections with one another and with team members.

As director of memory care, Barker oversees a person-centered approach and is a certified dementia practitioner. She has been with Oakmont for nearly five years and has been in the senior living industry for more than 14 years.

“My passion is dementia training, coaching and programming. Teaching my team to partner with each of our residents to lead them through their day, capturing their full potential,” Barker said.

Before going to East Sacramento, Barker worked as a memory care and programs specialist where she was responsible for the hiring, onboarding, and support of all of our traditions directors and activity coordinators across Oakmont.
