PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL — The 2024 Olympic Games recently concluded in Paris, and the 2024 Senior Olympic Games also recently wrapped up at La Posada, a Kisco Senior Living five-star, resort-style CCRC in this city on Florida’s east coast. Some of the events included Olympic mainstays like the noodle throw, corn hole, and the egg and spoon race. Okay, so maybe the events aren’t Olympic mainstays, but one participant was resident Richard “Dick” Reinke, an actual Olympic veteran.

Though 2024 marks his first time competing among the athletes, Reinke played an instrumental role in the 1996 Olympic Games, launching and recovering sail boats from 82 countries. As a member of the race committee team, Reinke supported athletes through 25 days of 14-hour shifts on 12,000 square feet of connected barges in the ocean, regular thunderstorms, and a heat index of 105 degrees. The storms and the heat couldn’t compete with the memories and the international friendships that Reinke made, though. The Japanese women’s team even called him up to the podium as they received their first sailing medal in history.

“I’ll never forget even the tiny details — the beautiful white tents and the views from the pontoon boat before sunrise,” said Reinke in a press release. “It was a spectacular opportunity to learn from people around the world. We grew a sense of community on the water, and I’ve tried to carry that same sense of camaraderie into every chapter of my life, including here at La Posada.”

“Stories like Dick’s are invaluable, and part of what brings us together and makes La Posada home,” Art of Living Well Director Rick Minichino said. “The Senior Olympics are a reminder that friendship, fitness, and fun are key to a happy life, and we’re proud to offer experiences like this to our residents.”
