Willow Valley Communities’ Camp Willow Awarded Innovation of the Year by LeadingAge PA

June 28, 2018

LANCASTER, PA–Willow Valley Communities, one of the nation’s leading 55 plus senior living communities, announces that its Camp Willow, a day camp for residents’ grandchildren, was awarded the Innovation of The Year Distinguished Service Award by LeadingAge PA at the Celebration of Service Gala at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. Camp Willow Organizer Jennifer Rynier accepted the award.

LeadingAge PA is a trade association representing Pennsylvania not-for-profit organizations that provide housing, healthcare, and community services to seniors. The Distinguished Service Awards recognize individuals, programs, and services that are models of innovation and excellence that contribute significantly to the quality of life of individuals they serve.

An annual program, Camp Willow hosts 76 campers—all grandchildren of residents—from across the United States to spend a week at Willow Valley Communities with five full days of activities, including an intergenerational day trip. Willow Valley Communities residents, team members, local educators, art teachers, and entertainers coordinate innovative programming for the camp utilizing the many Willow Valley Communities amenities including bowling alleys, tennis courts, vintage arcade, aquatics centers, fitness centers, fishing ponds, art gallery and others.

The idea for the camp was sparked by a resident who was challenged with entertaining her visiting grandchildren for a week. Camp Willow, now in its 10th year, is in extremely high demand; its limited spots fill up within 30 minutes of registration opening.

Stacy J. Musser, Willow Valley Communities’ senior director of resident life and wellness, offers several benefits of the camp. “For grandparents, Camp Willow provides a chance to spend an intimate week with their grandchildren, without their parents, and without having to worry about how to entertain them. Whether they are grandparents or not, residents enjoy the energy and laughter the campers bring.

“We are delighted that the innovative Camp Willow was recognized by LeadingAge PA,” Musser added.
